San José is the vibrant capital and cultural heart of Costa Rica, located in the country’s Central Valley within the province of San José. Sitting roughly 3,800 feet (1,160 meters) above sea level and surrounded by lush mountains and volcanoes, the city serves as the main gateway for travelers arriving in the country.
Most international visitors begin their journey here at Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO), the country’s primary airport located just outside the city in nearby Alajuela. From there, San José acts as the central hub connecting travelers to the Pacific coast, the Caribbean coast, and the country’s famous rainforests and national parks.
Founded in 1737, San José began as a small colonial settlement before gradually growing into the nation’s political and economic center. Today, the city blends historic architecture, bustling markets, museums, and cafés with the rhythms of modern urban life. While many travelers pass quickly through on their way to beaches or jungles, San José offers its own rich introduction to Costa Rica’s culture, history, and everyday life.

In the heart of the city stands Estadio Nacional de Costa Rica, the country’s largest stadium and home to major soccer matches, concerts, and national celebrations. Located in La Sabana Metropolitan Park, often called the “lungs of San José,” the stadium is a modern landmark symbolizing Costa Rica’s passion for sport and community gatherings.
